Monaco 2010 glitters into life

Posted on May 13, 2010

The glitz and glamour of Monaco is underway, with diamonds galore, extraordinary motorhomes in the paddock and lavish boats in the harbour.

And after FP1 the field looks pretty level on the track as well. Practice results are notoriously troublesome when it comes to race predictions but everybody is pretty closely bunched, with less than a second covering the top 10. Fernando Alonso has topped the first session while Robert Kubica finished third in an early marker for the Pole’s weekend.

It’s a genuine test of the driver over machine. Out and out pace helps – Sebastian Vettel will be the favourite of many this weekend – but it’s bravery, commitment and finding a rhythm which is going to take someone to the chequered flag. See Jenson Button in 2009 as exhibit a, as he took a storming victory all while Red Bull were swiftly catching Brawn on pace.

McLaren will be desperate for a result after two wins for Britons at the principality. Both Jenson and Lewis Hamilton have diamond encrusted helmets and steering wheel and Button is my favourite to repeat last year’s victory.

The midfield will be hopeful of a better than usual result, with both Force India and Renault hoping for a good run at what is expected to be a chaotic qualifying on Saturday. Both Adrian Sutil and Kubica have the potential to have a great weekend. The rookies will simply hope to keep it out of the barriers long enough to enjoy the atmosphere.
