Excitement builds ahead of the Silverstone Grand Prix

Arguably the biggest race weekend of the year is nearly upon us and all of the teams are busy ahead of the Silverstone Grand Prix.

The British squads will be hoping for a successful event and we know McLaren are bringing a big upgrade package. Lotus are also bringing another step of upgrades, with Mike Gascoyne tweeting about lots of new kit at the back of the car.

But Red Bull will be desperate to puncture the British party, exactly as they did in 2009. I wouldn’t want to be in Mark Webber’s shoes, coming off a massive accident and with a chassis discarded by his teammate earlier in the season. But Sebastian Vettel will be mighty this weekend and will be hoping to exploit the advantage his car still has on high-speed tracks.

It’s also the mid-point of the season and the teams will soon have to decide when to write off 2010. Renault are already talking about it, which would be a shame, while I’m sure Mercedes may already have done. Ferrari too will soon surely give up the hunt on the leading pair of teams because the Marenello squad are clearly still several steps behind.

But if this season does become a four horse race, what a prospect. Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button are at the top of their respective games while the Red Bull remains frighteningly quick, regardless of bubbling discontent in the camp. The Red Bulls should have this season sewn up but they don’t and McLaren are probably my narrow favourites to take both titles.

Just don’t ask me to split the drivers until we’re in Abu Dhabi.
