Kubica and Renault moving in unison

Robert Kubica has announced a two year extension with Renault, in a positive move for both the Pole and the French outfit.

Just months ago, Renault were wavering on the brink of an exit from Formula One. In the wake of crashgate, there was little expectation the team would survive.

And yet. In Robert Kubica they have a potential champion, albeit one yet to show everything required from a world beater.

And the development rate of the team has been ferocious this season. When they arrived in Bahrain, they were midfield at best but rolling up at Silverstone the squad arguably has the fourth fastest car on the grid and I can see them overhauling Ferrari this year if they keep up the pace.

It could be said Kubica had few options, with McLaren, Red Bull, Ferrari and probably Mercedes settled in their line ups for 2011 and possibly longer.

But Renault won the championship twice with Fernando Alonso and there is no reason they can’t have a shot with Kubica.
