Sebastian Vettel will be hoping to add his home Grand Prix to his 2010 roster later today after a storming qualifying performance.

The Red Bull driver pipped the resurgent Fernando Alonso and Ferrari to pole position and hope to put the ructions of Silverstone behind him.

And it’s hard to see past the young German. Leading from the front he is among the very best in the field and he has a chance to gain back a lot of ground on his main opponents.

Chief among them are McLaren who are having another tough weekend, with Jenson Button starting 5th and Lewis Hamilton 6th. The Woking squad won’t get another miracle of the kind seen in Britain and it’s tough to see them getting passed Mark Webber or Alonso ahead of them, even if Felipe Massa fades from third.

They will also be threatened from behind by Robert Kubica. Hopefully the rumours about Renault’s finances are unfounded, despite the public request for an advance on next year’s TV money. The Pole has the chance to perform on the track today and put those questions to bed, at least for a few days.

Even Rubens Barrichello could hope to worry the McLaren’s this weekend from 8th if the rear blown diffuser really isn’t working as the team would want. And he is, after all, faster than the Stig.

Will we get a great race this weekend? Perhaps. The weather looks unsettled and the field isn’t in the order you would expect. But it’s tough to see past a lights-to-flag victory for Vettel and Red Bull today.
