The Spaniard’s opponents had no answer to a magnificent first run in Q3, heading the field with a flawless 1m 45.390s.

It will be title leader Mark Webber who will be most disappointed from today’s session, finishing last among the five contenders all of whom look set to dominate tomorrow’s race.

McLaren will be reasonably happy starting third with Lewis Hamilton and fourth with Jenson Button and the Woking squad will be eager to demonstrate their resilient race pace tomorrow.

Rubens Barrichello in sixth may have the best chance of playing the dark horse role if the weather changes but it’s tough to see anything but these front five disappearing into the darkness. The pace is going to be ferocious.

Alonso is best placed to control the race given the difficulty with overtaking on this street circuit. It’s the perfect result for the title race.
