Lotus have capped an exciting week for the young team with their best result of the season, with Heikki Kovalainen coming home 12th.

It all but guarantees a tenth place finish in the constructers race for Lotus, which will be extremely significant in terms of prize money.

Combined with announcements this week about the team buying in Red Bull gear boxes and hydraulics, together with an expected engine deal with Renault now the relationship with Cosworth has been set aside, the Suzuka result came at the perfect time.

Mike Gasgoyne’s engineering team is dovetailing brilliantly with the business side run by Tony Fernandes. With the kit being bought in and, assuming their retention,  race winning drivers Lotus will be mid-field at worst in 2011.

Fernandes is underplaying the situation for obvious reasons. He said today: “The future for our team is so bright, and the decisions we have been making recently are giving us an incredible platform from which to build on days like this.”

I think it’s even possible to imagine Lotus duelling with the Mercedes and Renault on current trim.  Certainly, Williams and Force India should be looking over their shoulders. So long as the legal squabble over the Lotus name is resolved, it’s all set to be great for the sport.
