The Lotus vs Lotus battle will be fierce – and fun

Group Lotus has bought into Renault to form Lotus Renault GP and apparently become the second Lotus team on the grid.

The Lotus Racing outfit run by Tony Fernandes and Mike Gascoyne, which topped the second division of Formula One in 2010, are standing firm by their own brand.

And given the technical advances secured for Gascoyne to work with – Renault engines teamed with Red Bull gearboxes and hydraulics – there’s a decent chance the Norfolk squad can move into the midfield.

It’s a curious situation for all concerned especially if the teams end up racing each other directly, something I expect to be quite likely.

Commercially it’s a nightmare for the sponsors and viewers won’t be delighted, especially if this year’s Lotus also adopt the black and gold livery already being promoted by the Renault-based team.

Personally, I’d rather see them stay with green and yellow but we’ll see how it works out.

But at the end of the day, it’s a great name to have in the sport. If both run under their current monikers, and there seems little to stop it at this point, it will be a great battle.

The new boys don’t deserve to be crushed in the courts after a decent showing this year and they should fight it out on the track.
