The champions underlined their status as favourites as Sebastian Vettel ran a near flawless test.

The young German champion ran 93 laps on his way to a best time of 1m 13.769s, ahead of Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg and Gary Paffett in the McLaren.

It’s not a completely fair comparison as McLaren are running the 2010 car to learn about the tyres.

But it is a clear statement from the Milton Keynes-squad who finished last season on top of the Formula One world, with the fastest car and both trophies secured.

It’s been a busy day for Formula One, with 11 teams taking to the track and the drapes coming off four new cars. More were revealed yesterday with the Team Lotus machine from Mike Gascoyne’s technical outfit looking especially stunning. Ferrari were first out of the blocks last week.

McLaren are due to unveil the final front running car later this week, Virgin Racing are poised to launch at BBC television centre while Hispania say they will bring their new machine to the final test in Bahrain.

The next few weeks will pass quickly and the teams, especially the front runners, will develop at a ferocious pace.

March 13 will be here before we know it!
