The team made the announcement ahead of the second test in Jerez, which has started this morning.

Vitaly Petrov will do the bulk of the work in the early days but both Heidfeld, and reserve driver Bruno Senna, are due to get some running.

Renault team owner Gerard Lopez said the team was in nor hurry to name its substitute driver.

He told IVG.it: “There are drivers who have had good races, for example Nick Heidfeld. We all know that Nick is rather good, but we don’t know what level he is in now, we don’t know how he does with our car.

“Same goes for Vitantonio Liuzzi, same goes – I don’t know – for Bruno Senna, who last year was in a team with a car that could do nothing.”

Heidfeld is the standout choice to take Kubica’s seat. He has massive experience and, while he’s yet to win a Grand Prix, will bring solid if not sensational pace.

It’s hard to see Senna and Petrov making the most of what could be a very quick car, so bringing someone in is a no-brainer.

The test itself should be interesting up and down the pitlane. Everyone except Hispania is in Jerez and they are all running their new cars.

This means we’ll get the first proper look at the new McLaren and by the end of the test, we should be seeing some proper performance work.

It won’t be a clear view as to who is the quickest in the field but it will help educate the best guesses. n
