Have Mercedes found that elusive second?

Michael Schumacher and Mercedes have topped the time sheets in Barcelona as most teams finished their testing ahead of the 2011 Formula One season.

The seven time world champion punched in a 1m 21.268s after the final round of updates was installed on the car, the fastest time in testing.

It’s a real turn up for the books: Mercedes have been miles behind the pace all winter. Ross Brawn admitted just a week ago he needed to find a second to get the car anywhere near being competitive.

So to see Mercedes post a time faster than even Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull have managed this week is impressive. There’s no denying Red Bull have more in the tank – Vettel was on a five lap run when he posted his fastest time – but still.

McLaren will finish their troubled testing in the rain tomorrow. It’s been a poor winter for them and they’ll get little meaningful work done on the last day. It’s looking likely they could be starting with the fourth, maybe even the fifth, fastest car.
