Lewis Hamilton has promised to give Sebastian Vettel the “race of his life” when they line up alongside each other on the front of the grid in Melbourne tomorrow.

The McLaren driver is a shock inclusion on the front row after the British team worked miracles to turn a poor car from testing into a possible contender at this first race.

And Hamilton said after qualifying: “We still have some work to do, but I think the race is winnable from here  and I’ll be giving Sebastian the race of his life tomorrow!”

I think he’s being optimistic but there are plenty of unknowns which could help the 2008 world champion. No one quite knows how the tyres will behave over a race distance and there is a small chance of rain late on.

There is almost certainly going to be a safety car as well. We’ve seen some odd incidents this weekend, with Karun Chandhok and Felipe Massa both dropping their cars on cold tyres.

Vettel has to be the favourite: the RB7 is already showing itself to be a remarkable machine. But, with any luck at all, 2011 is going to open with a cracking race. I want to see Jenson Button thinking his way forward and Fernando Alonso thrashing his Ferrari to make progress.
