The pair were in a class of two ahead of the rest of the field, coming home less than a second apart.

It could have all been so different when Fernando Alonso made a stunning leap from fourth on the grid to the lead at the end of the first corner.

But the reigning world champion passed three cars on the outlap after his first stop and was pulled in early for the second, giving the German the undercut on the rest. Hamilton was in close pursuit at the pair had a thrilling battle in the last dozen laps but there was no way through.

Red Bull are completely untouchable in qualifying but in racing trim the McLaren is close. Jenson Button was not slow either – he managed to recover from a poor start to third at the finish.

An interesting talking point from this Grand Prix is the extreme impact on pace of tyres. The hard and soft were a long way apart this weekend and Nick Heidfeld, who wasn’t able to qualify because of a fire in practice, managed to finish eighth, ahead of his team mate.

The question will soon be asked, why should the drivers go out in Q3? Having a set of new soft tyres is arguably more valuable than pole.  Offering some extra points is an obvious solution.
