Fernando Alonso claimed British Grand Prix victory today with tactical nous and raw speed taking him to the flag.

The Ferrari driver, starting third, was quick all day and seized on a mistake in the Red Bull pitlane to jump early leader Sebastian Vettel.

Neither Red Bull, whose two drivers completed the podium, nor McLaren could compete in a race of twists and turns.

McLaren had a nightmare day, with Jenson Button retiring with a loose wheel and Lewis Hamilton hampered late on by low fuel. But Hamilton, despite losing third position, battled to preserve fourth on the final corner, colliding with Felipe Massa.

The Briton’s swashbuckling finale ensured an electric finish for the homecrowd, who poured onto the circuit for the podium celebrations.

And the after party was packed as drivers poured onto the stage to meet the adoring fans.

We leave Silverstone with Red Bull firmly in control but Ferrari have caught up – for now. We may see a reversal in the blown diffuser ban by the next race, which adds to the absurdity.

But whatever the results or the politics, it was a wonderful weekend to spend trackside. More blogging to follow from home!
