Who is winning the fight to chase Red Bull to the flag?

McLaren head into the German Grand Prix weekend insisting they remain the main challengers to Red Bull – while Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso insists his winning Silverstone pace was real.

The teams are back using the Valencia-spec blown diffuser rules so we will wait and see if Ferrari did get any advantage from the one off rule change two weeks  ago.

Chances are both teams will be trailing in the wake of Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel. But the forecast is decidedly mixed at Nurburgring this year which will hopefully be a leveller to ensure we see some great racing.

The ideal result for the championship would be Vettel finishing well down the field over these next two back to back Grand Prix. If he goes  into the summer break with his lead intact, the title race is over.

There has been a significant change at the back for this weekend. Karun Chandhok has taken over Jarno Trulli’s Team Lotus car for the weekend and it will be nice to see the popular Indian have a crack at a race for the first time since last summer.

Trulli has not been happy with the Lotus all year while his team mate Heikki Kovalainen has pushed his car beyond its boundaries. It will be an interesting change – and very possibly an audition for Chandhok taking the seat long term.
