Mark Webber took pole position for the German Grand Prix by the slenderest of margins after a fast and furious qualifying session.

The Australian posted a stunning 1m 30.079s to take P1 but Lewis Hamilton rung everything from his McLaren to park on the front row with a 1m 30.134s. It was a brilliant lap from the Briton – a time arguably not in the McLaren, given the outfit’s tardy form in recent weeks.

For the first time this season, Sebastian Vettel is off the front row of the grid. The defending world champion starts third after he failed to beat the front row times. Fernando Alonso will start in his Ferrari alongside the home favourite.

Less happy is Jenson Button, starting back in 7th. The 2009 champion was more than a second off the pace. Yet again, Button couldn’t match Hamilton in qualifying – and yet again it will hamper his race. Rain might give him a chance but otherwise it’s hard to see Button getting much out of the race tomorrow.

Rarely for this season we saw a true shoot out at the end of qualifying. It was an electric session and for the first time it was far from clear Red Bull had the pace. It’s what qualifying should be.

Hopefully,  it will open us up to another thrilling race. The forecast looks mixed and rain will be around tomorrow. It’s hard to pick a winner with any confidence. Webber is probably favourite but the three men behind him will all want to have a say.
